Wrestling came out on top in three of their first five matches of the season with wins against Kennedy, Richard Montgomery and Watkins Mill.
After disappointing losses to Churchill and Poolesville Dec. 6 and 13, the team looks to redeem themselves against Churchill at the “Bull Dog” Dual meet Dec. 19 and 20.
The team also needs to keep up their performances during practice to ensure more wins.
“As long as we have attendance to practice and everybody works hard, then we’re gonna have pretty good preparation for tournaments and matches,” said senior returning county champion Paul Okeyo (189).
One of the team’s biggest advantages this year is having a new wrestling room to practice in as well as a much larger team.
“Because we have a room to practice in for everyone to see, it attracts more attention,” said coach Tom Wheeler. “You have to start young to learn what you need to do.”
With many young new wrestlers, the team also has a promising future in getting stronger every year.
“[The new wrestlers] have a lot of dedication,” said senior Christina Tobar (125). “They’re very ambitious. I’m more than positive that after their first season they’re going to step up and take the role as being leaders of the team.”
To do well the rest of the season, however the team needs support.
“We’d like people to come out to the matches,” said Wheeler. “3:30, Dec. 23, right after school, people can come stay and watch a wrestling match.”
