Girl’s Tennis Preview, Sept. 17

After four straight wins, the girls tennis team finds themselves riding a wave of momentum as they look to take on rival Churchill today, Sept. 17. Despite losing the 2009 state champion doubles team Tiffany Lin and Alysia Rodgers to graduation, the team continues to dominate much of the county, posting another 7-0 shutout victory on Sept. 15.

“We started off the season pretty easily, but our first real match comes Thursday against Churchill,” said senior co-captain Ronique Taffe. “It’s going to be tough, but with all the drills, practices and the games that we’ve had, I think we should be fine. I’m confident.”

With every player and doubles team doing their part and winning against Einstein, the team has proven itself to have the depth necessary to compete against the county’s top teams. Many underclassmen have taken more prominent roles in the team.

“We have a freshman, Arielle Hartz; she’s stepped up big time,” said Taffe. “She’s amazing. [Sophomore] Sarah Bernstein and [juniors] Sarah Andrews and Ksenia Kirilyuk – all of our underclassmen have stepped up.”

As they gear up for Churchill tomorrow, the team is ready and focused on winning.

“When we concentrate we can do all the things we’re weak in, it’s just that we need to focus on that concentration,” said senior doubles player Alison Smith.
