Girls Soccer Season Wrap-Up

This season was a bumpy road for the varsity girls soccer team. After losing many seniors, including All-American Caroline Miller who holds two WJ scoring records for goals in a season and career, the team came into the season with big shoes to fill.  Senior captains Catherine Madden, Chaucia Sydnor, Emma Krieger and Lauren Levine were inheriting reigns to a team that had finished the year before with a 12-2 record, so people were a little surprised when the team finished their first seven games of the season 2-4-1 During one stretch of the season the team went winless for four straight games, losing to B-CC, tying Sherwood, then losing to Whitman and Churchill. It seemed as though the team had lost it’s sync, and that any hopes of getting past even the first round of playoffs were diminished.

Then after a 2-1 win at home against Gaithersburg followed by a 2-1 overtime victory against Richard Montgomery, the lady Wildcats were able to tie together a string of wins, finishing the latter half of the year 6-1. No one knew what hit ’em. Especially not the Richard Montgomery Rockets, who in the first round of the playoffs sought to avenge their loss to the Wildcats in the regular season, assuming it would be easier to accomplish on their home turf.  Luckily, the team’s momentum carried over from the regular season as the Wildcats routed the Rockets 4-0, advancing on to the second round where they would meet the Blair Blazers. The 3rd-seeded Blazers who handed WJ their only loss, at home, during the second half of their regular season stretch, came into the game well-rested and ready. The team had a first-round bye. In the end, the momentum of the Wildcats was not enough to overcome the Blazers, as WJ fell 2-0 to close out the season with a 8-6-1 record (including playoffs).
