Over the past couple of years, the Washington Capitals have created a new chapter in D.C. sports. Washington, a traditional football town, split its love between the Caps and the Skins, following the Capitals’ success and the Redskins’ struggles. For the last half- decade, the team was a regular division champion, but due to the fact that they never made it out of the second round of the playoffs in that timeframe, the Caps faithfuls were starting to get sick of the Caps. As Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was a declining superstar, and other Washington teams continued to bring in young superstars such as Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg and Robert Griffin III, the Caps seemed to be losing popularity. Due to labor talks and a possible cancellation of the entire NHL season, Washington will turn to these fresh superstars in the futer for entertainment and hope for some playoff success. If the Capitals hope to revamp their fan base, they will need to bring in a new group of young exciting players to energize D.C.’s hockey faithful and keep the Washingtonians questioning if they really are a football town.
