Exploring cultural diversity: A glimpse into International Week
The South Asian Student Union offered samples of common dishes in South Asia. “A lot of people came for food day — it was a success,” junior Aria Tahsmabi, one of the students who helped coordinate international week, said.
On Visual Arts day, students showcased images of traditional paintings and sculptures from their culture.
On Thursday, students could appreciate the variety of languages and cultural drawings on the large paper hanging from the wall. “It was an opportunity for us to gather together and share each other’s cultures and learn from others. It was an opportunity to see how culturally diverse our school is and we got to experience each other’s history and roots.” – senior Rona Shacham.
The Filipino Club passes out beef lumpia, a type of Filipino spring roll filled with minced beef and vegetables, on Food Day.
The Hispanic/Latin Heritage Club placed a large sheet of paper for every student to draw elements of their cultural heritage, like country flags.
The Muslim Student Association showcase Islamic culture, including the Prophets of Islam and what Muslims eat during Ramadan. “We talked about what Muslims around the world eat for Ramadan, for the first meal before sunrise and the meal after sunset. And we basically brought those foods with us.” – senior Soukeyna Ndoye.
Juniors Aria Tahmasbi and Ava Heydarian from ME/NA Club set up a table on Language Day. “We had name tags for people to write in different languages,” Tahmasbi said.
