Local- On Mon., Nov. 26, four 17 year-old boys were charged with the fatal stabbing of 18 year-old Olijawon Griffin, who attended Sherwood High School in Montgomery County.  The stabbing occurred at the Woodley Park Metro station on Nov. 17, bringing the number of charged participants to nine, four of whom are being charged as juveniles. As of Tuesday, a tenth perpetrator is still being pursued. According to police, the robbery of Griffin’s $400 jacket, iPhone and shoes, which were later recovered, led to an encounter at the Woodley station where Griffin was stabbed to death by Chavez Tyrek Myers, who was identified by police via a surveillance camera. Griffin was trying to help his friend, who was being beaten by a group of 10-12 people at the time of the stabbing. The death of the 18 year-old brought to light questions over the safety of Metro, as well as the safety of the Adams Morgan neighborhood in which Woodley Park Metro station is situated. The Metro stop is situated on the Red Line, which some WJ students use to commute to activities and school.

US- Four women are suing the U.S. government over the current ban on combat that exists on all females in the military, making the case that females are limited by laws restricting them to non-combat units, and often, the fighting they actually do because of existing loopholes goes unnoticed.

The women are being represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), who noted that, “Their careers and opportunities have been limited by a policy that does not grant them the same recognition for their service as their male counterparts.”

Maj. Mary Jennings Hegar, one of the defendants, said that current military policy is “an injustice to women who have come before us and who continue to put their lives on the line for their country.”

Global- On Thur., Nov. 22, Egyptian president Mohammed Mursi produced what is called a “constitutional declaration” that decreed no presidential decisions may be undermined by any other authorities. While he has stated that this measure is simply temporary and meant to prevent the new democracy, protests have erupted in response to the controversial measure, and many are calling into question Mursi’s actions.
