Opinion Blast: Brooklyn Basketball

Basketball is back in Brooklyn after the Brooklyn Nets beat the Washington Wizards 98-88 on Monday. The game marked a return to the vibrant basketball community that has flourished in Brooklyn for decades.

The game also took a step in the right direction with regards to the type of communities the NBA should be targeting with their franchises. Cities like Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas and St. Louis are all basketball crazed, but lack professional teams. With most current NBA teams not turning out profits, new markets are needed.

Nowadays most success in the NBA is attained through the aquisition of stars through blockbuster trades. A blueprint that the Heat, Nets and most recently the Lakers have all followed. With other teams suffering a dearth of competitive talent, more teams may be needed to more effectively disperse talent amongst the league.

Switching up cities for passionate new fanbases has already proven a success with the Oklahoma City Thunder’s profitable move from Seattle. Ambitious and effective ownership groups are popping up everywhere, and it may be the time to consider more teams in the league or, at the very least, switching out some of the ineffective franchises that have not been profitable for years.
