The cross country team was crowned state champions on Nov. 8th, which should translate into success for the distance indoor track runners. With most members returning for the indoor track season, the team looks to improve their season from last year and make an impact in the winter.

Indoor track holds 14 different events divided up into general sections ranging from short sprint to distance running. Although most schools hold their practices outside, meets are held indoors, usually at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex or at Georgetown Prep.

Coach Tom Martin, who manages the distance team, pointed out some rising runners.

“[Junior] Jenna Willett is a standout on the distance side,” he said.

Junior sprinter Michael Pitsenberger described his feelings for the team.

“It’s our fastest team,” he said. “We look really good this year.”

Coach Tom Rogers added that he saw a lot of strong new faces, ready to jump in and make an impact.

“The team has changed from young and inexperienced players to seasoned veterans,” said Rogers. “Both boys and girls are extremely dedicated and competitive.”

Among the new faces are junior Chaucia Sydnor and freshmen Laura Dally and Emma Van Wagoner.

Rogers also looked ahead to the upcoming track and field season in the spring.

“We build the base right now to reach the peak at outdoor season,” said Rogers. “I’m also hoping to develop new athletes and build on to the success we had that’d be real important.”
