Lacrosse is one of the most popular spring sports. Both the boys and girls teams are looking to find promising new athletes at tryouts this year.

With the winter season coming to an end, spring tryouts are just around the corner. Today, March 1, spring sports including baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, track and gymnastics will begin their tryouts.

For student-athletes tryouts can turn into something very stressful, wanting to perform the best you can adds a lot of pressure when playing. Even students who were on the team the previous year are not guaranteed a spot so everyone has to show up and show out.

For spring volleyball, there is a coed varsity team and a boys varsity team run by Bill Morris (coed varsity) and Brian Fairall (boys varsity). There is no girls volleyball in the spring, only in the fall.

“I’ve only been on a volleyball team for three months and with the competitive environment and the fact that only twelve boys can make it, it will be very challenging. But, I won’t be disappointed if I don’t make it, I will just work even harder next year,” sophomore Victor Goerlitz said.

There are four lacrosse teams, varsity and JV teams for both boys and girls. Fall league allowed the athletes to build connections with the team and coaches prior to playing in the spring season.

“Along with running on my own, playing with my older sister and for Capital Lacrosse, I played with the WJ fall ball team. All the girls are super nice and encouraging,” freshman Ginger Fishberg said.

The baseball boys varsity team is coached by Steve Sutherland and the JV is coached by David Joseph. The coaches specifically look for good hitting and how hard the boys can throw.

Getting ready for tryouts can be intense for athletes, club teams keep the players ready for tryouts. Many athletes also have places they train consistently at.

“I’ve been going to Primal 1, a baseball training facility to get in shape and ready for the upcoming season. I am very excited for tryouts and think this year is going to be a good one,” sophomore Jay Wandell said.
