The annual Washington Capitals playoff collapse occurred again on the night of May 13 as the New York Rangers slaughtered the Capitals 5-0 in a must win game seven in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
For the past six years, the Capitals have made the playoffs and failed to make it past the second round. The losing trend continued; the Capitals won the first two games of the series, but the Capitals went on to lose four out of the next five games, losing the series.
The Capitals were one of the hottest teams in the NHL and they were lead by the Rocker Richard trophy winner, which goes to the player with the most goals in the NHL, Alex Ovechkin.
As the off-season starts for the Capitals, general manager George McPhee has some very tough decisions to make regarding which players to keep and let go as he tries to assemble a squad that will be able to win in the playoffs next year.
