Michael Jackson does his signature moonwalk while performing smash hit “Billie Jean”, making the dance, song, and attire iconic.

“I Wonder” by Kanye West (2007)

A masterpiece by a masterful artist, “I Wonder” is a standout track on a standout album. The song creates a mood that fills the listener with both adrenaline and a surreal feeling all within the span of four minutes. To partner the eccentric composition, West adds authentic lyrics that appeal to people from all walks of life who are following their dreams. To fade out the tune, he includes an almost two-minute-long piano piece on top of the original beat, leaving his audience in a trance.

“Marcy Me” by Jay-Z (2017)

Recounting his rags to riches story using unique language, this song is almost like a story in its lyrics and rapping style. Jay-Z, another musical genius, is renowned for his intuitive, educational verses that widen the audience’s perspective. “Marcy Me” is no exception and goes even further to include other aspects that wouldn’t normally be found in Jay-Z’s songs.

“Sky’s the Limit” by The Notorious B.I.G. (1997)

Though Biggie Smalls died a quarter of a century ago, his musical impact still echoes today, and his ingenuity and poetic deliverance still touch listeners’ hearts. One of the standout examples of Biggie’s talent is “Sky’s the Limit.” Released posthumously, the song opens with a 46-second build-up that includes a brief message from a soft-spoken woman intended to be Biggie’s mother. After this interlude, Biggie takes his time to break into his flow and delivers great lines and vibes, even adding adlibs to spice it up. With a soulful chorus and two deep and personal main verses, Biggie delivers an important message in a way only he could: it’s important to be positive about life.

“Buffalo Soldier” by Bob Marley (1983)

Bob Marley was one of the few artists on a different plane than everybody else in the industry. His influence was matched by few and surpassed by even fewer; his artistry was as elite as the most popular artists of all time, and his authenticity was awe-inspiring. Popularizing reggae, he combined silky smooth melodies with exotic sounds and lyrics that roll off the tongue. Referring to the all-black U.S. Cavalry Regiments in the American Indian Wars following the Civil War, Marley frames their heroism in the song as one that was more personal and desperate, one that was for their own lives. Interestingly, in this song, Bob Marley uses fragmented phrases instead of cohesive sentences. This is likely to appeal to the listener’s empathetic side, as he uses rather strong language to tell a story. Perhaps what the listener may gain most from listening to this timeless masterpiece is the need to be truthful and authentic.

“Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson (1982)

One of the most popular songs of all time written, composed, produced, and sung by one of the most popular artists of all time. Need I say more? It is incredibly unlikely that you have not heard this song at least a couple of times. Popularity doesn’t always equate to great, but in this case, it does. When it came out in 1983, this song and the new dance move that accompanied it both became automatic smash hits. Perhaps the best thing about the song is that it can be played on almost every occasion. Its fast tempo and catchy beat are apt for a festive get-together or relaxing downtime, whether you are with few or many. Even though you may have heard this song numerous times, it would do you well to listen to it more, mainly just for the vibes.

“Cookie Jar” by Jack Johnson (2003)

A lesser-known track by a relatively well-known artist, this song is nonetheless as much of a must-listen as the others on this list. Highlighting the lack of accountability in our society, Johnson partners brutally honest lyrics with a guitar rhythm and percussion beat to encourage some much-needed self-reflection. Throughout his career Johnson has become known for his soft acoustic melodies and beach pop tunes; however, he has also showcased an ability to write more pointed lyrics and deliver important messages in his songs. “Cookie Jar” is perhaps the finest example of this and may lead listeners to discover some of his other extraordinary work.
