Freshman Annabelle Kehoe finds time after the JV volleyball game to do her homework while watching the varsity volleyball game. “It’s all about balancing sports and school, so I just have to find time to do my homework after the game,” Kehoe said.

When freshmen start high school, it represents a new milestone, a new beginning and something to genuinely look forward to. It takes a few days or maybe weeks to get into the rhythm of high school and develop a routine. After a few weeks into the new school year, it’s time to hear what the freshmen have to say about WJ.

Some challenges that freshmen may be handling are adjusting to their new schedule as well as the workload and balancing the workload.

It took me a minute to learn how to manage all of my homework as well as be on JV volleyball. It is a bit challenging, especially if we have a late game or have to stay for varsity, but it’s all about consistency and just staying on top of everything.

As well as adapting to the new school environment, some freshmen were wondering how they can get involved in themes and school spirit.

“One way that I participated in school spirit is going to football games with my friends and dressing up,” Cerbello said.

Since school spirit is such a big deal at school, some ways that freshmen could get involved are to dress up for spirit days, cheer at pep rallies and football games, as well as to post on social media about the school. Another big topic this school year is the hour-long lunch and the new strict technology policies.

“Honestly I don’t find it very different from middle school with the new phone policy but it was kind [of] a disappointment this year when teachers were so strict because of my friends last year talking about how much freedom they have,” freshman Julianna Cabanillas said.

“My first initial impression of high school was basically just more freedoms and more stuff to do and I think one of the big things that really do show it is the one-hour-long open lunch period because it also likes allows us to do things on our own and it’s nicer than having a designated cafeteria time that I know some other schools have,” Cabanillas said.

A big annoyance that has been noted is how large the new freshman class is, turning the school population into over 3000 kids.

“It’s kind [of] annoying when there are so many kids just standing around in the middle of the hallways like they aren’t walking or anything, they just stand there,” sophomore Alexandra Royzman said.

One of the biggest things for freshmen to do at school is just to get involved, whether it be supporting our school sports teams (especially on a Friday night) or just representing our school colors it can make your time at school a whole lot better!
