Students talk summer plans

As the bug-infested months of spring end, summer opens the door for a large number of opportunities. Students can finally throw away the stacks of paper that weigh down their backpacks and bask in the hot sun. Not everyone spends their summer vacations the same way and many get creative when coming up with things to do or places to go.

“I’m planning on going to Spain this summer, just to have a fun time with my family and family friends down there. I’ve never been so it’ll be an experience. My mom has been doing a little bit of research and found some places that we are going to visit,” freshman Austin Sakhon said.

Sakhon admires the Spanish culture and language and is ready for school to end and vacation to begin. However, there are a large number of students who travel outside of the country as well.

“I’m going to go to China and visit my family, have a good time you know? We are going to a lot of diverse cultures around Asia, each of them having their own traditions and cultures so it’ll be good too,” sophomore Fred Chen said.

Summer looks different for everyone. Some people also enjoy short trips to nearby states, visiting family and friends and more.

“I’m going to participate in some summer camps and hopefully go on a road trip this summer. This summer, I [also] really want to involve myself with others and make great memories,” sophomore Elisa Deparis said.

We can’t forget events happening in summer. Independence Day celebrations across the country invite locals to family barbecues and fireworks, with the smell of hamburgers wafting past the fences of backyards.

If you haven’t been doing very well academically this year, have no fear. Summer school classes are available, and devoting some time to studying and catching up with schoolwork isn’t such a bad idea. However, be mindful that MCPS has implemented prices and costs for summer school classes this year. Each class is now $350.

Summer break also introduces new ways of connecting with others through camps and intramural programs. Through activities and athletics, kids of all ages can play a range of sports, including tennis, basketball and soccer. There are several opportunities available for kids and teenagers at schools, fields and pools.

The opening of pools is always exciting, giving students a casual spot to hang out and spend time with their friends. Nothing can beat the refreshing feeling of diving into the deep end after boiling in the sun. Additionally, many SSL camps and volunteer opportunities are open during the summer, and these opportunities can be found on the MCPS website. Not only is it convenient, but it’s also an easy way to contribute back to the community and fill out some graduation requirements. So, if you don’t plan to travel this summer, check out the local events and involve yourself.
