Junior Elsa Santighian cradles the ball down the field as Kristina Einberg attempts to retrieve the ball. The Cats had a tough loss of 11-7 to the Whitman Vikings.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. on Viking turf, girls’ lacrosse played against Whitman on Monday, May 13. Both teams were pumped and ready for this heated rematch as the Cats were hungry to win.

Starting strong, the Cats and Vikings had back-and-forth possession. The score stood at 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, with senior captain Anna Zucconi scoring in the last three minutes.

Into quarter two, the Cats were steady on defense, thanks to major help from senior goalie Brett Wall. Wall made a monumental save with 5:30 left in quarter two. However, with the Vikings being able to slide through the defense, Whitman scored with 5:13 left. This game caused Zucconi to make many fast breaks and interceptions, yet the overall defense lacked press and this led to two more goals in quarter two by the Vikings with the score 5-1 going into the break.

Starting quarter three strong, junior attacker Ginger Fishberg scored with 9:55 left in the quarter, giving the Wildcats a boost of energy and momentum to push through. Senior defender Lily Fisher made a fast run up the sideline and passed to freshman Becca Hymes who passed to Fishberg, yet the pressing attack did not lead to a goal.

With six minutes remaining in the third quarter, senior captain Natalya Krouse received a yellow card and wasn’t able to play for two minutes. With a lack of press and communication due to the penalty, the Vikings scored two more goals before the start of the fourth quarter.

To start the fourth quarter strong, WJ scored and set the score to 10-4 Whitman. During this quarter, the Cats stayed determined and didn’t let up a goal until 4:31 minutes remaining. Krouse scored two goals and junior Shae McCloskey scored with 4:00 remaining ultimately finalizing the score at 11-7.

Although this ended their 2024 season, the courageous Wildcats team has hope for next year and what it will bring them.
