Mézes (gingerbread) is a classic holiday dessert, both here and nationwide, especially in Hungary. Keep reading for a typical Hungarian mézes recipe.

Ingredients:
1 cup of honey
⅔ cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of clover
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of ginger
½ stick of butter (4 tbsp)
4 cups of flour
Add sour cream (at least 2 tablespoons to begin with) until it reaches the consistency of play dough.

Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix melted butter and flour in a bowl then warm up honey until it is runny and add it to the mixture. Add egg, cinnamon, clover, baking soda and ginger. Expect the dough to be sticky. Add flour to the board to roll it out. Once the dough is rolled out, knead it until it is flat enough to cut into pieces with a cookie cutter. Bake at low heat for about 10 minutes. Expect it to be very soft when taking it out of the oven; let it cool for about 15 minutes.

That’s how you make mézes!
