  • Service Standout: Bryan Kibet Bryan Kibet has always been involved. Having over 450 SSL hours, Kibet has done service in Leadership, MSP, the County-wide MCPS SGA, WJ Stage and his local church. The most unique thing about Bryan is that he knows everyone. And everyone can attest to that, you’ll hear it a lot, Bryan is friends with everyone. Bryan has made himself known in the WJ community, where he continuously hopes to make leadership and leadership events accessible to everyone. Bryan hopes to continue to serve his surrounding community at Lafayette College where he is going to major in Theatre and Economics. “I always love to explore and branch and join new spaces and do more for the community, I love seeing more change and positivity,” Kibet said.

  • Academic Standout: Alexander Lewton Alexander Lewton has always been a top student in his academic career at WJ. Lewton has prioritized his academics which helped him commit to Dartmouth University, majoring in Government. Lewton is also part of the symphony orchestra, Science Olympiad, Drumline, Cryptography Club and The Pitch. Lewton took a mix of Social Studies and STEM classes in high school in which he excelled in, his favorites being AP World History, Symphonic Orchestra and AP Italian and the hardest being AP Physics 1. Lewton attributes his success to raising his hand in class a lot and staying dedicated and motivated. “The most important thing is coming to class everyday, pay attention for the 45 minutes, put effort into the work and sometimes you won’t be able to do that, you just gotta come back the next day and put in the work, as Tim Rodman says ‘Live the 5’,” Lewton said.

  • Unique Pathway: Sienna Karp After high school, Sienna Karp will be attending the United States Air Force Academy and she is committed to their swim team as well. Sienna was exposed to the military lifestyle very early from her dad who is currently in the military. Originally, Sienna was recruited to swim at Penn State but since she knew she wanted to go into the military after college, this was not the right path for her. After initially being medically disqualified from the academy, Sienna believed Penn State was her only option, but she was determined to pursue her future goals. An entire rebuttal process granted her an appointment to USAFA, which she accepted. “I am most excited to swim with the team and get to know the other Cadets. I am also excited for Basic training this summer..and a little nervous,” Karp said.

  • Artistic Standout: Jia Kim JJ Kim started drawing around the ages of three and four, using art as a distraction from the world around her. Her freshman year, she found digital art, which she quickly took a liking to. Although Kim does not plan to pursue a career in the arts, she has found art in every other aspect of her life, as she works on Spectator magazine, knits and plays the violin with the orchestra. “Between junior and senior year it also served as a major hobby because I was so stressed all the time,” Kim said.

  • Musical Standout: John Grossman After learning the piano in kindergarten, John Grossman adopted a strong passion in music. His resume grew rapidly as he began to learn to play other instruments, including the Tuba, Baritone, Trombone, Piano, Bass, Guitar, Banjo, Ukulele, Percussion, Cello, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet as well as the four Saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor and bari). As one of the captains of the pep band and a member of WJ’s pit orchestra, John Grossman has utilized music as a form of self expression. Committed to the Berklee College of Music, he hopes to further expand on his knowledge and find community with others who share his musical interests. “Music to me is a community because whenever I play it, I feel at home. It’s a way that I can express myself without words,” Grossman said.

  • Athletic Standout: Alex Chang Varsity hockey player Alex Chang performed notably throughout his high school career as a four year varsity athlete, playing a crucial role in the Icecats’ journey to winning the state championship this year. Chang has been skating for 16 years—almost his entire life—and playing hockey for 13. Now, he looks to play Division I Hockey at the University of Maine. “Being on any team really forces you to learn how to work with others, help resolve conflicts, and build relationships. There’s a lot more to sports than just going out and playing and that’s what’s so beautiful about the game,” Chang said.
