Sophomore Celiana Caraballo, junior Stella Lichter and junior Claire Kuemmerle get ready to return a serve against Quince Orchard on Sept. 13 . The team rebounded from a loss two days prior, winning 3-1.

After some ups and downs, the girls’ volleyball team has pushed their record to 3-2. Following their blowout win against Watkins Mill to start the season, the girls’ volleyball team lost to Clarksburg on Sept. 11. They came back from the loss, and beat Quince Orchard two days later. They followed up with a win at Whitman and a five-set defeat at the hands of BCC.

Against Clarksburg, they were outmatched with the final score being 3-1. Their consistency on offense was a big problem in the match.

“The Clarksburg game wasn’t our best match. They were a really strong team and we were kinda out of it on Monday. We weren’t communicating as a team, we weren’t working together and we were kind of playing as individual players on the court. That’s not how a volleyball team should play,” junior Ariel Mazor said.

Despite the loss, the team rebounded from the loss to beat Quince Orchard 3-1 on Sept. 13.

“I think we communicated well on the court. Our passing and our defense was really, really good, and then our offense was also very good. They played very well, but our offense was just stronger,” Mazor said.

Early on in the match, Quince Orchard took the first set 25-20, putting the Wildcats in an early hole. After that set, the Wildcats won three sets in a row to win the game, including the third set in which they dominated by a convincing 25-10.

“I think we did a better job [of returning the other team’s serves] in the later sets, and we were able to dominate and just keep going on runs and it kind of threw them off a little bit. I also think our communication was really good in the back row, and there was a bunch of yelling and talking in the back row to make sure that there were no miscommunications,” junior Stella Lichter said.

The next game against Whitman also very much went to the Wildcats favor, as they shut out the Vikings 3-0. The game marked the Wildcats first road win of the season.

“[In] the Whitman game we did really good. Our covering was good, our hitting was good, and that was one of the best games we have played this season so far,” sophomore Celiana Caraballo said.

The Wildcats next game was a nail-biter against the BCC Barons, with the Barons winning 3-2 after five sets. The Barons were on the cusp of winning the fourth set to win the match, but the Wildcats came back to win the set and force a final fifth set. The Barons easily took control in the fifth set, winning the match 3-2.

“We started out very strong, and then in the second and third set I don’t know what happened. We kinda lost our communication, lost our focus, and we weren’t playing well as a team. Fourth set we had a big win [which was] really exciting and then in the fifth set we fell short and were not communicating,” senior Lilly Pickett said.

The Wildcats will next face off against Churchill on Wed, Sep 27.
