Senior captain Wendy Liu receives a ball during the team’s Sept. 22 game at Northwood HS. The team won this game 3-0 and finished the season 10-5.

The girls’ volleyball team fell to Churchill HS 3-1 on Mon, Nov. 7, in the second round of the MPSSAA playoffs, ending their season. The Wildcats finished the season with an overall record of 10-6.

The Churchill Bulldogs entered the game with a 13-1 regular season record, losing only to undefeated Wootton High School, while the Wildcats entered as 10-5. Churchill later went on to beat Wottoon in the regional final.

Despite the loss, the team managed to keep the game close, notching a thrilling second set win, 30-29, fighting to win the crucial sudden death point at 29-29.

Overall, the team reflected positively on a season that brought new successes and breakout stars.

The season was marked by significant improvements over the 2021 season. The Wildcats beat many teams in 2022 that they had lost to in 2021, including RM, which many players remember as one of their favorite moments.

When we beat RM early on in the season, for our team they were like the goal game to win. All the practices early in the mornings and late in the evenings were meant to prepare us to win that one match and when we did, everyone was not only shocked but also really really excited.

The team also noted the friendship built throughout the season both on and off the court.

“This season was so fun and I made so many new close friends. I’m so glad I got to be a part of the team this year and get better surrounded by good teammates,” sophomore and outside hitter Stella Lichter said.

Senior captain Wendy Liu reflected on her four years on the team, noting the hard work and team effort.

“This season was one of the most memorable seasons I’ve experienced. I love the team and we all worked really hard to achieve our 10-4 record. […]. I’ve made a lot of great memories with the team this year and I’ll miss the team and this season a lot.,” Liu said.

Liu will also play in the MCPS Senior All-Star Volleyball game held at Churchill HS on Sat, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the game will benefit Leveling the Playing Field.
