The season is now underway for the coed volleyball team and on Wednesday, April 12 when the Patriots of Thomas Wootton High School came to WJ to take on the Wildcats. The Wildcats were able to defeat the Patriots and advance their record to 2-1.

Recapping the last week, they had a game on Thursday, April 4 against the Hornets of Damascus High School. The Wildcats didn’t get off to the start they’d hoped for as they were swept by a final of 3-0 in a best of five set.

Head Coach William Morris weighed in his thoughts on the team’s performance.

“The beginning is always a little harder, a lot of the boys that join are new and it can be challenging at times since they’re new to the program and haven’t built up a chemistry yet,” Morris said.

For senior Patrick Domenech, this was his first volleyball game in his high school career.

“It was pretty great, I was nervous to play once I was put in there,” Domenech said. “But my teammates were really great and helped me understand what I was doing and even though we didn’t win, it felt great to play in a game situation.” .

The team was in hopeful spirits after their loss. Coed chemistry takes a little time to develop, but there’s an understanding that they have to work together in order to make this work and be able to put some games in the win column.

The team’s next game was against Richard Montgomery High School where the team was able to capture their first victory of the season. The Wildcats were able to defeat the Rockets and gain some confidence by securing a win.

After a sluggish start to the season, the coed team has rebounded nicely, their next game is on Friday, April 13 at Winston Churchill High School.
