Within these walls: students return to WJ

  • As AP tests start taking place in the building, classes need to be moved to other classrooms. With the weather warming up, The Pitch class decided to have their class outside due to an AP test taking place in their classroom.

  • Back in school students are having a hard time adjusting to the empty hallways of WJ. The once lively and energetic hallways have become dreary and a reminder that life has not been normal for over a year.

  • Chemistry teacher Michael Bauer teaches the online class and the in-person class at the same time. The mesh between the online world and in-person reality for teachers and students has made for a confusing year.

  • Students are now under a very strict schedule, the chaos of which the ending school bell bus pickup has been reduced to silence. The crowds of students rushing to get on the bus to go back home are now sets of single file lines in which students barely talk to each other. Even when at school students are still isolated from each other.

  • Junior Arel Moav study’s in the morning, sitting in the cafeteria, one of the two areas students are confined to in the morning. The mornings in the cafeteria provide students breakfast and time to prepare themselves for the upcoming day of school.

  • Gym classes are harder in person as covid restrictions limit the number of sports that can be played since many are risky due to social distancing guidelines. Students were watching videos and following along while maintaining 6 feet social distance.

  • Some teachers are staying at home rather than coming back in person. Students learn the material either in the portables or in the aux gym. Students brought headphones and took classes through their computers, virtually learning while in school.

  • During lunch students take time to study and eat, enjoying their food while enjoying their break from zoom. Students use this time to socialize as much as they can because for many it is the only time where they are able to see their friends.

  • During lunch students have many options of where to eat, and as the weather gets warmer more students are choosing to eat outside. A few weeks ago the track opened up so students were able to walk the track during lunch.

  • English teacher Aishling McGinty teaches her class in person. Though in-person school looked different last year, students are still able to learn a lot in their classes. Students were socially distanced and tables were cleaned after every use.

  • Every morning students scan a QR code that tells the cafeteria workers whether they will be picking up a free lunch or not. Students that chose to eat lunch chose their seats in the cafeteria.
